IP Address
Each site that
we host gets its own unique, static IP address. An IP address is the numeric address
of a website (or, in some cases, a group of websites.)
Some hosts assign
one IP address for multiple sites. The downside to this is that if one site is
caught spamming, the other web sites using that IP address can be blacklisted
by ISPs and search engines.
A dedicated IP
address is not shared by other domain names; it is unique to your domain name
and your space on the server. It allows you to use your own SSL (security) certificate
and anonymous ftp as well, which you can't do with a shared IP address.
It is also very
helpful when transferring from one host to another. With a unique IP address you
can access your website using a web browser or ftp before your domain name server
have been changed. This allows for testing of the site before performing a DNS
transfer. This can help eliminate any downtime during the transfer.
