4 Important Tips That Will Help You Effectively Market to Gen Z

The new generation of consumers, Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012), makes up over 20% of the U.S population and represents about $149 billion of spending power. This is a HUGE consumer base that your business needs to start taking advantage of.  Some of you may have already tried to market towards these tech savvy kids, while others might feel too old or out of touch and don’t know where to start.

With these 4 tips, you’ll learn just how easy it is to effectively market to Gen Z!

 Tip #1: Short-Form Video Content

Gen Z, sometimes called Zoomers, are notorious for having a short attention span. The average Zoomer has an attention span of 8 seconds, 4 seconds less than a millennial. We need to grab these so-called Zoomers' attention and do it quickly.  There's no better way to do this than by creating short-form video content. Short-form video content can be anything from Instagram Reels and Stories, TikToks and Youtube Shorts. Be sure to include visual effects, popular music, utilize trends and more to create the most entertaining content possible. This type of eye catching content will be sure to entertain and engage the younger generation. Don’t believe me? Look at TikTok for evidence. TikTok allows users to post 30 second to 3 minute videos and has quickly become one of the most used apps on the planet. With over 656 million downloads just last year, TikTok is proof that short-form video content is critical to market towards Gen Z.

Tip #2:  Personalized Content

It’s time to throw out your old marketing tactics and start personalizing your content in order to attract the attention of Gen Z. Gen Z loves genuine content and wants to feel like a brand is having a conversation with them. Use language that is relatable and relaxed. Look to incorporate more human elements to your marketing strategy, such as pictures of employees working or customers enjoying your product.  This marketing tactic will be sure to build customer relationships and gain the trust of Gen Z.

 Tip #3  Micro Influencers

Want to utilize influencers to market your products or services but don’t have a large budget? No problem! Micro influencers are equallyif not better, at engaging Gen Z and won’t break your bank compared to those A-list celebrities that huge corporations recruit. Micro Influencers are defined as anyone that has a following between 1,000-100,000 followers. These smaller influencers have been found to have a 60% higher engagement rate than influencers with millions of followers. Gen Z loves micro influencers because they can relate to them more than larger influencers and celebrities. This marketing tactic is perfect for those businesses looking to attract Gen Z with just a fraction of the cost.

Tip #4  Forget about Facebook and Start Utilizing Snapchat

If you’re specifically targeting Gen Z, you need to move away from Facebook. About 34% of Zoomers think that Facebook is for "old people". Facebook is still a great platform to target other generations, just not Gen Z. Instead, look to market on other social media platforms such as Snapchat and TikTok. Snapchat reigns king when looking at the total number of Gen Z users at 49.5 millions users with TikTok at a close second place. Snapchat is a platform that is highly interactive and engages users. The “Stories” feature is exactly the type of content that Gen Z loves to engage with. Your Business should take advantage of this feature and be as creative as possible. There are many other ways that a business can market on Snapchat. You can create a business Snapchat account, sponsor a Snap Ad or Lens, create a sponsored geo filter etc… There are countless opportunities to create content on Snapchat and effectively  market towards Gen Z.
